2026 Caption Heads

Colorguard Team

  • Kara has been involved with the White Sabers Drum Corps for 12 years as a colorguard member, technician, and colorguard caption head. She is excited to act as co-caption head of the colorguard for another season.

    Kara began her participation in the marching arts as a member of the Patriots Winterguard and continued until she aged out of A class in 2015. Other groups she performed with include the Rochester Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps (2007-2009), the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps (2010-2013), and the White Sabers Drum and Bugle Corps (2015-2019). She has worked with various upstate NY organizations as a colorguard instructor, choreographer, drill designer and caption head. These groups include Gates Chili Independent Winterguard, Medina Marching Band and Winterguard, and the White Sabers Drum and Bugle Corps.

    Outside of the marching arts, Kara works full time as a commercial Interior Designer at an Architectural

    Firm in Rochester NY.

  • Shannon continues with the Corps after serving as Co-Caption Head in 2019 & 2025 and consulting for various seasons.

    Longtime guard performer, Shannon's previous marching experience includes Trumansburg World, Patriots, and Syracuse Brigadiers. She's instructed, designed, and consulted various groups including Brigadiers Winterguard and Homer Winterguard.

    Shannon was inducted to the Mid-York Color Guard Hall of Fame in 2023.

    Currently, Shannon is the Technical Supervisor for Brigadiers Winter Guard and the Director of Baldswinsville Varsity Winterguard and teaches other Baldwinsville programs including the Marching Band and JV Guard.

    In her free time, she acts as a taxi service for her 2 of her 3 kids, all of which play hockey.

  • Rachel Brown has been involved with the marching arts for over 17 years and is excited to return to the White Sabers as a colorguard technician for her seventh season! Rachel began participating in the performing arts at age 5, taking dance classes at La Danse Workshop. Rachel began her colorguard career at age 9, performing with a variety of groups including Patriots winterguard, Gates Chili Independent, White Sabers, Spirit of Atlanta, Blue Stars, Mayflower World Winterguard, and is currently in her third year with AMP World Winterguard. In the fall of 2019, she began teaching colorguard and found a new love for the activity. Rachel has taught at Gates Chili Winterguard, The Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps, and is in her sixth year as a technician and choreographer with the Victor Varsity Winterguard and Victor Marching Blue Devils. Outside of the marching arts, Rachel is an early childhood educator who teaches in a preschool classroom. When it comes to the marching arts, Rachel believes that the most important takeaways are the life skills that the students learn and the bonds that they make with their teammates. This is at the forefront of her teaching approach and informs everything that she does when working with the members. Rachel is looking forward to teaching this fantastic group of people and helping them continue to grow and challenge themselves this season!

  • Jason began his drum corps journey with the White Sabers, being a member of the color guard from 2018-2021. He is now very excited to join this organization as a staff member!

    His additional marching experience includes Corning Painted-Post Highschool from 2018-2021, Gates Chili Independent Winterguard 2022 and 2024, and the Boston Crusaders Color Guard from 2022-2025.

    Currently, Jason is marching with AMP winterguard, as well as teaching at Corning Painted-Post High School Winterguard.

  • Molly has been involved in the marching arts for over 22 years, first finding her love for color guard with the Webster High School Marching Band. She has since been a performer and instructor for various groups competing in the NYSFBC, WGI, and DCA/DCI circuits. Molly first joined the White Sabers in 2018 and continued performing in 2021 and 2022, ultimately joining the color guard staff in 2023. She is proud to be a part of the White Sabers family and can't wait for what's in store for 2026!

Brass Staff

  • Heath Miller is a music educator who currently teaches high school band at Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square, NY. He has a wide variety of teaching experience, including working with marching arts groups like: Central Square Marching Band and indoor percussion, New Hartford Indoor Percussion, Sachem Marching Band, Sunrisers Drum & Bugle Corps, and White Sabers Drum & Bugle Corps.

    Heath studied music education at Syracuse University with his primary instrument being tuba/ trombone. During this time, he marched contra with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps.

  • Kiefer Austin Brien began his drum corps journey with the White Sabers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2018 as a trumpet player. After several seasons with the corps, he aged out in 2024 as a member of the Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps. Kiefer is excited to return to the White Sabers in 2026, now entering his first season as a member of the brass instructional team!

    Kiefer is proud to begin his teaching career with the White Sabers, bringing his passion for the activity and the experiences he gained throughout his marching years to the next generation of performers.

    Outside of drum corps, Kiefer is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Vocal Performance at The University of Alabama, with a focus in opera.

  • Nick Ruel is excited to join the White Sabers in 2026 as a brass instructor. He holds a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Western Connecticut State University and a Master’s in Music Composition from the Hartt School. Nick is currently the band, chorus, and drama director at Derby High School in Connecticut, with previous experience teaching instrumental and choral music at both middle and high school levels.

    In the marching arts, Nick is currently the music coordinator, composer/arranger, and sound designer for the Newtown High School Marching Band and the director, composer/arranger, and sound designer for Newtown Winter Percussion in Sandy Hook, CT. He marched mellophone with 7th Regiment (2015–16) and the Hawthorne Caballeros (2022). He taught with the Connecticut Hurricanes as Brass Caption Head (2024-2025), as well as at Enrico Fermi HS, Enfield HS, New Bedford HS, and the Highland Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps.

  • Evan Caggia is a conductor and music educator from Cary, NC. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and a Jazz Certificate from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. During his time at Appalachian, he served as principal saxophonist of the Appalachian Wind Ensemble, lead alto saxophone of Jazz Ensemble 1, Co-President of the university chapter of the National Band Association, and baritone section leader with the Marching Mountaineers. Currently living in Syracuse, NY, he is studying in pursuit of a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting at Syracuse University where he is a Graduate Teaching Assistant with the university bands. 

    Evan began in drum corps as a euphonium player with the Madison Scouts in 2021 and 2022, and has since been teaching scholastic and independent marching groups in North Carolina and the Central New York region. Groups with his instruction have earned Bands of America Regional medals and WGI Winds class medals. He is excited to join the White Sabers brass team and share his passion for the activity with new performers!

  • Will Turner is currently completing a degree in music therapy at Montclair State University in NJ! This is his third season on staff with the White Sabers!

    Prior to joining the staff at White Sabers, Will marched with the Hawthorne Caballeros from 2014-2023, and served as the tuba section leader from 2016-2023. In addition to teaching at the White Sabers, he teaches brass and visual for the Madison Marching Dodgers Band from Madison, NJ, and Brass for the Caldwell University Marching Band from Caldwell, NJ.

    His favorite thing about the White Sabers is the family feel the Corps has, and his favorite holiday is croissant Friday.
